Barefoot Babies: Pros

Newborns' feet are mostly fatty tissue that progresses into bone as the aging process occurs. Most babies are born with flat feet, and the arch generally develops during the school years. Research has shown it is beneficial for young children to walk barefoot, as this may help to strengthen the overall foot. Additionally, walking barefoot may help to toughen the soles of the feet. Studies have shown parents may have to guide their children to walk on different surfaces, including dirt, gravel, sand, and carpet. If you would like more information about why your child can benefit from walking barefoot, please consult with a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Geller Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

The Pandemic and Running Injuries

The pandemic prevented many people from engaging in workouts in the gym. Research has shown it may help to begin running slowly on the treadmill before venturing outside on pavement or trails. This may help to prevent running injuries and may be a result of the body warming up to run again. It is suggested that when people resume running outside, the speed and mileage are gradually increased. Covid 19 isolation may have changed people’s running habits, and this may have happened from anxiety, remote work, and schooling. They may have had less time to run than they previously had and may compensate for that by running harder and longer. Wearing shoes that fit correctly and being aware of your running regime is instrumental in preventing running injuries. If you would like information about how running injuries can affect the feet, please consult with a podiatrist, who can recommend additional methods on how to prevent them.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists of Geller Foot Clinic. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

How to Deal With Arthritic Foot Pain

Arthritis, a painful inflammatory condition, can affect many parts of the body including the feet, particularly as you age. Arthritic foot pain often comes with stiff joints, as well as a loss of strength, flexibility, and mobility in the affected area. Various things can be done to relieve pain and slow the progression of this disease, including foot massages to improve circulation and decrease tension in the joint, using heat (to loosen the muscles and reduce stiffness), or using ice (to constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the problem area).  Wearing proper footwear (wide enough to accommodate orthotics or other foot aids and with proper arch support to stabilize the joints and feet) and continuing to move despite the pain may also help.  Other suggestions include maintaining a healthy body weight, participating in physical therapy, using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, topical creams, and;/or steroid injections. While there is no cure for arthritis, a podiatrist can help determine the best way to handle your arthritic foot pain.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Geller Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Where Is the Cuboid Bone Located?

The cuboid bone is one of seven tarsal bones that are located in the foot. This particular bone is found on the outside of the foot, near the front of the ankle, and this is where pain is felt when the cuboid bone becomes dislocated. It can happen as a result of enduring a break or sprain, and it often causes pain and discomfort. Relief may be found when the affected area is massaged, and a podiatrist may manipulate the cuboid bone back into its normal position. Some patients find it beneficial to wear specific shoes that can help the foot to feel better, in addition to taping the foot for stability. If you have pain in this part of your foot, it is strongly suggested that you speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can offer you correct treatment solutions for cuboid syndrome.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Geller Foot Clinic. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.
